Year 3 have been exploring the functions of different parts of a plant. We started by doing some secondary research and a thought experiment to find out the function of each part. We then set up an experiment to try and get proof that stems help to transport water. We set up several carnations in different coloured water and then observed what happened over the course of a week.

We had some fascinating discussions about our results! The blue water drastically changed the colour of the stem, leaves and petals whereas the green and orange water didn’t. The children had some fantastic ideas as to why this happened as well as how to improve the experiment if we were to do it again.
