Learning about Light in Year 3

This week, Year 3 have been learning about Light. We used three investigations to explore the impact of light on darkness, and what ‘light’ actually is!

Our first experiment was to shine a torch through a glass prism and see the range of colours that this creates. We talked about how light is actually made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet!

Then, we investigated the use of light and how the absence of light creates darkness. We used a large cardboard box with holes in it to explore what we could see (not pictured).

Our final experiment to start us thinking about next week’s lesson was to look at how light passes through different materials. We looked at a pen in a glass of water to see what happens to the pen. We found out what the pen looks crooked in the water!

Why do you think this is? What do you want to find out about light?
