Year 4 have begun an exciting new text in Destination Reader: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This powerful and imaginative story has already captured the children’s interest and sparked lots of curiosity.

Our focus this half term is on evaluating the text deeply. The children are learning to look beyond what happens in the story and think carefully about the author’s choices, the characters’ actions and motivations, and the messages behind the text.

During lessons, pupils are taking part in thoughtful discussions, sharing ideas, building on each other’s responses and justifying their opinions using evidence from the book. We are encouraging everyone to explain why they think something, not just what they think.

It has been wonderful to see the children engaging so well, listening in a caring way to different viewpoints and growing in confidence when talking about reading. We are looking forward to exploring more of The Iron Man and continuing our rich reading conversations.
