Science: Animals Including Humans
This half term in Year 3, our scientists have been busy exploring the amazing human body as part of our Animals Including Humans topic. To bring our learning to life, we took on an exciting design and making challenge: creating our own bionic arms!
We began by learning about the human skeleton and muscles, focusing on how our arms move. The children discovered that muscles work in pairs and pull on bones to help us bend and straighten our arms. We talked about why our arms are so important in everyday life and how some people may need support if part of their body does not work as expected.
With this knowledge in mind, the children became engineers and designers. Using simple materials such as cardboard, straws, string, paper fasteners, and tape, they planned and built bionic arms that could grip objects.
This hands-on project helped the children deepen their understanding of how the human body works, while also developing important design, engineering, and scientific enquiry skills. Most importantly, it reminded us how science can be used to help people and make a positive difference in the world.
Well done, Year 3—you were brilliant scientists and engineers! 👏🧠✨
