The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.

Our lovely Year 6 children have been away on a wonderful residential trip this week to the New Forest. They have been very active and have thoroughly enjoyed this very special time together before they move on to secondary school in September.

Year 4 & Year 5 performed on their brass instruments this week at Parliament Hill with an audience of other schools and parents – they were amazing!

We very much look forward to welcoming our new Reception class to school next week; this will be followed the week after by all other classes getting to know their new teachers for September. While transitions can feel a bit daunting and cause feelings of insecurity, we must embrace the changes of growing up and help ourselves to see the future as exciting opportunities to come.

The classes for September are as follows:

Christian Value – Service

This half term we have been learning about saints and how they were inspired to follow God and to put the needs of all others ahead of their own, the absolute embodiment of service. We learnt of St Genevieve of France and St Elizabeth of Portugal who, when faced with conflict and war, as was common in the period in which they lived, changed people and prevented bloodshed through sharing the power of care and prayer. St Elizabeth was a wonderful model of kindness towards the poor, the sick and the homeless. She was also a successful peacemaker between members of her own family and between nations. The life of St. Genevieve was one of great self-discipline, constant prayer, works of charity and obedience to God’s will every day of her life, not just in times of need. She never gave up trying to do as much good as possible. They were both committed to serving all with humility and charity.

When we hear stories of such devoted service, we cannot imagine how we can begin to even come close to showing such care to others. Yet we can all do something, no matter how small, to make a difference and serve others. We must also remember the power of prayer in helping others and the strength we ourselves also gain in making the best and right choices in life – just as God wishes for us.

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalms 18:2

Wellbeing Tip – The Joy of Laughter

It’s true, laughter is a strong medicine. It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens our immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain, and protects us from the damaging effects of stress. Nothing works faster to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Here are some ways to start thinking about adding more humour to our routines this month:

  • Smile – Smiling is the beginning of laughter, and like laughter, it’s contagious. When you look at someone or see something even mildly pleasing, practise smiling.
  • Bring humour into conversations – Ask people what funny things they have seen recently, or if anything funny has happened to them.
  • Engage with comical media – If you know there are certain shows, video clips, writers or comedians that make you laugh, make time to engage with them.
  • Spend time with fun, playful people. As humans, we take on the energies of people around us so try and spend time with those who laugh easily – both at themselves and at life, and who routinely find the humour in everyday events.
