Stone Age Survivor Session at Hampstead Heath’s Secret Garden

This term, our Year 3 class took a step back in time with an unforgettable Stone Age experience at the Secret Garden in Hampstead Heath. As a culmination of our history topic, we explored what it truly took to be a Stone Age survivor!

Surrounded by the tall trees and natural landscape, students got hands-on experience building shelters just like people did thousands of years ago. Working in small groups, they used branches, leaves, and twigs to create sturdy structures, discovering teamwork and problem-solving skills along the way. After shelter-building, we moved on to another essential skill: fire-starting! Under careful supervision, students learned how early humans made fire, with a few even creating sparks themselves. The amazement and pride on their faces were undeniable.

The session was not only an adventure but also a chance to connect our learning with the real-world challenges of our Stone Age ancestors. We left with a new appreciation for the resilience and ingenuity it took to survive in the Stone Age – and many memories of a day we’ll never forget.
