Year 6 went to Hampstead Heath to test out their orienteering and map reading skills.
At first, we became familiar with how to read a basic map using features such as landmarks, the cardinal directions of North, South, East and West, as well as how colour can be used to show different terrain.

We then learnt how maps use special lines (known as contour or topological lines) to show height. Finally, we designed and made our own island maps, using the features that we had just learnt.

After a lunchbreak, we then went off in groups to explore Hampstead Heath in an orienteering activity, where we had to find certain posts hidden around the heath. The winning team was the one that found that most posts and scored the highest amount of points!
